This innovative approach, which moves beyond conventional documentation methods, offers an anthropological and sociological perspective on the current stepdancing community and provides a unique lens through which to understand today’s traditional dance landscape.
Background: Following the designation of Québec stepdancing as an element of Québec’s intangible cultural heritage in 2023, Danse Trad Québec launched a pilot project aimed at ensuring the long-term vitality of the practice. As part of this initiative, the organization commissioned Humain Humain, a firm specializing in ethnographic research, to conduct an in-depth social portrait of the ecosystem.
The findings from this ethnographic consultation led to a series of strategic recommendations designed to support the transmission, practice, and long-term development of Québec stepdancing.
